WORLD OF WATER, WHINFELL FOREST

Client: Rank Group Plc
Value: c£10M
Completed: May 1997

The World of Water forms the dramatic centrepiece of Rank's ambitious and extraordinary short break Holiday Village carved out of Whinfell Forest near Penrith in the Lake District. Limbrick Limited conceptualised the theme and story line of the dramatic, multi-level, multi-featured, sub-tropical Leisure Water Paradise.

Internal water areas, totalling approximately 1,500m2, are set in the most stunning artificial rockscapes in the UK, with real tropical plants, under a structurally expressive, entirely glazed structure. Surrounding the main central water area, an internal lake-like wave pool, are a series of different, interconnecting water experiences, providing intrigue, variety, surprise and choice for the swimmer exploring the undulating tropical terrain.

Water areas are provided to suit the whole family: adults, children, toddlers and babies. Terraces and relaxation areas associated with, and overlooking the water areas, are set within the landscape. The series of water space experiences grouped around the wave pool are interconnected by a continuous water course, or river, which cascades from its high level source through various water areas, driving its way forward right through to the outside air at the lowermost corner of the building. Fully integrated into the realistically themed landscape are:

  • A major Wave Pool
  • Rapid rides
  • Waterfalls
  • Bubble Pools and Cavern Pools
  • Geysers
  • Bubble loungers
  • Water cannons
  • Free fall water slides
  • Flume rides
  • A formalised Training Pool
  • High level external water areas leading to a giant, exhilarating White Water
  • Falling Rapids
The Falling Rapids surge, swirl and hurl its riders down approximately 6m through the natural landscape cascading over weirs en route. Intermediate pools are provided at intervals on the way down, where swimmers can relax, join, or leave the ride. The Falling Rapids eventually terminate in a frothing, bubbling Catch Pool, with its dramatic views over the lake.

Whinfell Forest is now part of Center Parcs.
