THE QUAY, GLASGOW

Client: Rank Group Plc
Value: c£20M
Completed: Late 1996

The 'Quay' is an exciting, multi-leisure development located on a dramatic, Clydeside site in Glasgow, just west of the Kingston Bridge, replacing the former Post Office Sorting Depot. At the time, it was Glasgow's premier destination Leisure Park, it revitalised this important Glasgow City site, and reclaimed the river frontage for everyone to enjoy.

A new access to the Leisure Park drives a dynamic vehicular, pedestrian and visual axis right through from Paisley Road to a new public piazza, as part of the new Quayside Walkway to the River Clyde, running the full length of the site development.

The main venues of the development are a dramatic new design for a 12-screen 2,500 seat Odeon Multiplex, the 75th and biggest (at the time of construction) in the chain of over 350 screens across the UK, a 35,000sq ft Mecca Bingo and Social Club with a capacity of over 2000, and a 1500 capacity Rank Leisure Hotshots Entertainment complex. There are also a Drive-Thru' Burger King and 3 no. riverside restaurants, being Fatty Arbuckles, Frankie and Benny's, and Whitbread Brewer's Fayre, complementing the major venues.

Time was the main challenge in the construction of this major project. It took just a 36 week construction programme to transform a historic, but derelict, no man's land into a major £20.0m premier Leisure Destination.
