MILE END LEISURE CENTRE
Client: London Borough of Tower Hamlets Value: c£15m Completed: Opened February 2006 |
|
This major Community Leisure Centre forms the focal point of the development of new Sports Facilities in Mile End Park, which also includes the development of outdoor mini-soccer facilities. The development has become a very high profile element of the Mile End Park, which itself is already an established social/community facility of local and national importance.
The park already contains a number of high quality, well designed and ecologically considered buildings, all providing essential needs to the local community. The development completes the final part of the jigsaw of the park adjacent to the existing Mile End Stadium and is a worthy addition to these facilities and includes:
- 25m, 8-lane Swimming Pool with spectator seating for 150
- Separate 17m x 8m Learner Pool with movable pool floor
- 4-court Sports Hall
- 80 station Fitness Suite
- 40 station Fitness Suite (women only)
- Wet Health Suite
- Aerobics Studio
- Creche
- Mini-Soccer complex comprising:
- 7 no. floodlit, all-weather, mini-soccer league pitches (able to also be configured as 10 no. five-a-side pitches)
- New build Changing Pavilion integrated into the existing Athletics Stand
The centre is located within an area of London, and in particular a Borough, which is regarded as one of the most socially deprived materially and which has a very high Muslim population. It was an important part of the brief to encourage increased access, inclusivity and participation of all user groups, and this was an important driver in the design development. Extensive consultations were carried out during the finalisation of the brief with user groups to ensure that the design achieved this goal. |
